Garrison – Author Talk with George Carroll Whipple III

June 1 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us for an author talk! Learn more about our local history with George Carroll Whipple III, author of Garrison, an Arcadia Publishing Postcard History Book. Books will be available for sale by Split Rock books and registration is requested. Refreshments will be served.

About the Book

It is said that good things come in small packages. The tiny hamlet of Garrison-on-Hudson on the western side of Putnam County, New York, bore a mighty footprint in the nation’s history due to its strategic location on the Hudson River. In 1779, General Washington moved his headquarters directly across the river from Garrison near what would later become West Point Military Academy. In following years, many wealthy New Yorkers such as William Henry Osborn, Edwards Pierrepont, and Hamilton Fish built their impressive summer estates here, and many of those manors still stand today.

About the Author

George Carroll Whipple III, a lifelong resident of Putnam County, grew up on his grandfather’s farm in Kent Cliffs, just outside Carmel, New York. He founded Preserve Putnam County/Whipple Foundation, saving many local historic icons. In the recent past, he has turned his attention to restoring to its former grandeur the iconic 1881 Castle Rock, the estate of William Henry Osborn, a visibly prominent and renowned landmark for all who reside in or visit Garrison.
