Readers aged twelve and under can read books all summer long and win prizes, as well as earn raffle tickets for one of our grand prizes!
How it works:
When you sign up for the program, you receive a reading log. Each summer reading log contains 50 bubbles and each bubble represents 10 minutes. For every 10 minutes of reading time you complete, fill in 1 bubble (use a stamp, a sticker, or feel free to color it in). When you fill up all the bubbles on the sheet, return it to the library and show a library staff member. They will sign that they saw your sheet, return it to you if you want, provide you a new log, and then you will get to pick something out of the treasure chest. You will also fill out a raffle ticket and be entered to win one of our grand finale prizes. There are no limits to how many logs you can fill out and how many raffle tickets you can enter. A downloadable version of the reading log is available here in case you can’t make it to the library.
You may read whatever you would like: books, graphic novels, magazines, etc. If you are too young to read on your own, you can still participate by having someone read to you or with you.
The summer reading kickoff with Talewise Science Heroes is Saturday, June 29th at 1pm, but you can sign up beginning June 22nd. Completed logs will be accepted until Friday, August 9th. The summer reading finale with Two by Two Animal Haven and Homestyle Creamery will take place on Saturday, August 10th at 1pm. The raffle for the grand finale prizes will be drawn that day at 2:15pm. You do not have to be in attendance to win a prize. If your name is picked more than once, you will be given the first prize your name was drawn for and a second ticket will be picked.
Readers aged thirteen and up can read books all summer long and earn raffle tickets for a chance to win a grand prize.
How it works:
For every book you finish between June 22 and August 10, 2024 you can earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of this year’s grand prizes!
Use the reading log to track the books you read over the summer. For every book you read, write down the title, author, and date you finished it. A downloadable version is available on our website in case you can’t make it to the library.
Stop in periodically or at the end of the summer to show your reading log to a librarian. For each book completed, you will earn one raffle ticket toward a grand prize.
Complete the reading challenge for bonus tickets! Read a book based on the theme of this year’s summer reading program: “Adventure Begins at your Library!” We have provided prompts on the reverse of your reading log sheet. You can get 2 raffle tickets for each prompt you complete and a bonus for completing the challenge! You can also join the challenge on The Storygraph App to track your progress and see what other people are reading for each prompt! Search Desmond Fish Public Library in the “reading challenges” section of the app (click “browse” and search by challenge title or host) or scan the QR code on the reading log. A downloadable version of the reading challenge is available here for those who prefer not to use Storygraph, or visit the library for a paper copy.
Completed logs will be accepted until Friday, August 11th at 2:00pm. The summer reading finale with Two by Two Animal Haven and Homestyle Creamery will take place on Saturday, August 10th from 1-3pm. The raffle for the grand finale prizes will be drawn that day at 2:30pm. You do not have to be in attendance to win a prize. If your name is picked more than once, you will be given the first prize your name was drawn for and a second ticket will be picked.
We’re excited to announce that our annual S.T.E.A.M. Punks science camp will return for its sixth year! We will host two, identical four-day sessions, each available to twelve learners entering grades 3-7. Session One takes place July 8th-11th and Session Two July 15th-18th from 1:00pm-4:00pm.
Focusing on the intersection of technology and the arts, the STEAM Punks curriculum may explore design thinking, art making, robotics, coding, physical computing, storytelling, environmental science, A/V recording, photography, mind hacks, and more through creative and irreverent challenges assigned each day. There are a limited number of spots available, and applications are read on a first-come, first-served basis and will be accepted until the program and wait list are full.
Submit an application here. Please note that camp is currently full; however, we will take applications for the waitlist.
