Readers aged twelve and under can read books all summer long and win prizes, as well as earn raffle tickets for one of our grand prizes!
How it works:
When you sign up for the program, you receive a reading log. Each summer reading log contains 50 bubbles and each bubble represents 10 minutes. For every 10 minutes of reading time you complete, fill in 1 bubble (use a stamp, a sticker, or feel free to color it in). When you fill up all the bubbles on the sheet, return it to the library and show a library staff member. They will sign that they saw your sheet, return it to you if you want, provide you a new log, and then you will get to pick something out of the treasure chest. You will also fill out a raffle ticket and be entered to win one of our grand finale prizes. There are no limits to how many logs you can fill out and how many raffle tickets you can enter. A downloadable version of the reading log is available here in case you can’t make it to the library.
You may read whatever you would like: books, graphic novels, magazines, etc. If you are too young to read on your own, you can still participate by having someone read to you or with you.
The summer reading kickoff party is Saturday, June 28th at 12pm, at which time signup begins! Completed logs can be turned in beginning Monday, June 30th, and will be accepted until Friday, August 9th at 2pm. The summer reading finale with Two by Two Animal Haven and Homestyle Creamery will take place on Saturday, August 9th at 1pm. The raffle for the grand finale prizes will be drawn that day at 2:15pm. You do not have to be in attendance to win a prize. If your name is picked more than once, you will be given the first prize your name was drawn for and a second ticket will be picked.
Readers aged thirteen and to eighteen can read books all summer long and earn raffle tickets for a chance to win a grand prize.
How it works:
For every book you finish between June 28th and August 9th, 2025 you can earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of this year’s grand prizes!
Use the reading log to track the books you read over the summer. For every book you read, write down the title, author, and date you finished it. A downloadable version is available on our website in case you can’t make it to the library.
Stop in periodically or at the end of the summer to show your reading log to a librarian. For each book completed, you will earn one raffle ticket toward a grand prize.
Completed logs will be accepted until Saturday, August 9th at 2pm. The summer reading finale with Two by Two Animal Haven and Homestyle Creamery will take place on Saturday, August 9th from 1-3pm. The raffle for the grand finale prizes will be drawn that day at 2:30pm. You do not have to be in attendance to win a prize. If your name is picked more than once, you will be given the first prize your name was drawn for and a second ticket will be picked.
Adults can participate in Summer Reading and compete to win one of a number of awesome prizes! (Teens can also opt to participate, however, they will not be able to collect raffle tickets for the designated teen summer reading and earn those prizes.)
How it works:
Earn points for attending programs, reading books, and participating in bonus activities. Point Tracking Sheets are available at the front desk, with details about which activities have higher points. Participants will also receive emails about opportunities to receive additional bonus points throughout the summer.
At the summer reading finale, prizes will be awarded to the participants with the most points; the highest scorer will have first pick of prizes, followed by the next highest scorer, etc. If you cannot make it to the finale, you can email your sheet early to justice@desmondfishlibrary.org.
Even if you sign up late, you can earn points retroactively. For every book you’ve finished (including ebooks, audiobooks, and graphic novels) between June 1st and August 9th, you can track them and earn points, with the opportunity to earn additional points for writing reviews on our shelf cards (available at the library front desk).
Some programs are worth more points than others. Attending our “Color Our World” themed programming will score you the most points, but every point counts. The more library events you attend, the more points you’ll earn.
There are a slew of bonus activities that you can participate in for more points as well. Volunteering in your community, borrowing an item from our Library of Things, participating in the MHLS Road Trip, are just a handful of ways to inch closer to victory.
Prizes include tickets to Hudson Valley Shakespeare, Charcuterie sets, Split Rock Book Bundles, Color Our World swag, and more!
We’re excited to announce that our annual S.T.E.A.M. Punks science camp will return for its eighth year! We will host two, identical four-day sessions, each available to twelve learners entering grades 3-7. Session One takes place July 14th-17th and Session Two July 21st-24th from 1:00pm-4:00pm.
Focusing on the intersection of technology and the arts, the STEAM Punks curriculum may explore design thinking, art making, robotics, coding, physical computing, storytelling, environmental science, A/V recording, photography, mind hacks, and more through creative and irreverent challenges assigned each day. There are a limited number of spots available, and applications are read on a first-come, first-served basis and will be accepted until the program and wait list are full.
Submit an application here. Please note that camp is currently full; however, we will take applications for the waitlist.
